Although ferrets are not for everyone, they can make excellent pets for their owner. They are affectionate and bond with their owners, they are quiet for much of the day and there are few pets as playful as ferrets. However, they seem to have acquired a negative image that is not deserved. If you’re thinking of buying a ferret, learn more about how ferrets make good pets.
Here are the 10 reasons why you should have a ferret pet :
Ferrets are Cute
Ferrets are small in size and can provide your family with a sweet long-term pet. Most ferrets live about six to eight years, but some can live up to twelve years. Female ferrets generally grow to 13 to 14 inches in length and weigh between three-quarters of a pound and two and a half pounds. Male ferrets are often a little larger. They are usually between 15 and 16 inches long and weigh between two and three and a half pounds if sterilized. They may become larger (four pounds or more) if they are not sterilized.
Ferrets are Playful and Curious
They will entertain you endlessly with their antics and will gladly have fun with toys for ferrets. Watching ferrets play for simple pleasure will cheer you up. It has been proven that owning a pet has beneficial effects on the health of its owner because of the joy and affection it brings to it.
Ferrets are Sociable, Friendly and Affectionate
It is often recommended (but not essential) to have more than one pet ferret. Having two or more ferrets increases the fun factor for the owner and ferrets as they interact and play together, sometimes with a wild abandonment. Even if they have other ferrets with which they can socialize, they will still need the attention of their owners.
Ferrets are Smart
Some owners are amazed at how skilled ferrets become at solving problems. Ferrets are very determined and strive to find a solution with surprising persistence. They love challenging puzzles and games and it is recommended to provide them with toys or games based on puzzles.
Ferrets are Silent
Although they can vocalize and do so, ferrets are mostly very quiet. The biggest noise they make is when they are very scared or injured. They also sleep for much of the day.
Ferrets are Small
Ferrets don’t need a huge cage, although the bigger it is, the better. The ideal cages for ferrets are high and have several levels, so they don’t take up too much space. They need to spend time out of their cage each day to play and exercise.
Ferrets are Easy to Feed
Ready-to-use ferret food is available in most pet stores or online retailers. While you can offer them a variety of foods, it is helpful to use high quality pet food as a basis for proper nutrition.
Ferrets can Be Dragged to Litter
Ferrets can be trained to go to a box, but not to the same extent as cats and there will inevitably be some accidents. Most ferrets can be trained fairly reliably to use a litter box in and out of their cage. This is a great advantage when they exercise for a few hours a day!
Ferrets are Easy to Exercise
They can do all the exercise they need by tearing up your home (ferret-proof)! With a harness the size of a ferret and a little training, you can take them for a walk. Few things can start a conversation with strangers faster than walking your ferret in the park!
Ferrets Have Distinct Personalities
Each ferret is unique and has its own personality. Some are independent and others are very cuddly, but each is an individual! If you are considering having a pet ferret, it may be helpful to first meet some pet ferrets. You’ll see how their personality varies and you’ll have a good idea of what it means to own a ferret.
